Artists who participate in these arts in front of an audience are called performers, including actors, magicians, comedians, dancers, musicians, and singers. Performing arts are also supported by the services of other artists or essential workers, such as songwriting and stagecraft. Performers often adapt their appearance with tools such as costume and stage makeup. Disputes as to whether or not to classify something as a work of art are referred to as classificatory disputes about art.

The well-equipped ceramics studio at IVS allows the students to work with a range of materials and firing methods. An integral part of working in this medium is the understanding of materials, which is incorporated in the studio course as the Material Science segment. This entails a study of raw materials through theory as well as analyses, tests and experiments undertaken to create clay bodies, glazes and slips. A close interaction with studio instructors, demos, regular critiques and discussions facilitate the students to develop independent bodies of work. If you’re more interested in the study of the literary arts, Boston University offers an introductory course called The Art of Poetry, which is focused on the pleasures of poetry and its underlying principles as an art form.

Egyptian temples are typical in that the most largest and most lavish decoration was placed on the parts that could be seen by the general public, rather than the areas seen only by the priests. Art is also used by art therapists, psychotherapists and clinical psychologists as art therapy. The end product is not the principal goal in this case, but rather a process of healing, through creative acts, is sought.

Creative Arts & Media Courses

One of the core components of the Fine Art Programme, the Drawing course aims not only towards skill building and technical application, but also serves as a means towards imaginative expression. Subsequent to the Foundation year programme, the Drawing course in the Fine Art Programme reiterates the development of a visual language and introduces a broad range of materials and techniques. Students draw from the model and explore outdoor and studio drawing to investigate a range of drawing strategies. Within the Fine Art Programme, drawing is emphasised as an independent means of expression that motivates the growth of a personal vision.

The Sculpture course engages with conceptual concerns that run simultaneously through the process based challenges of various materials. The Sculpture studios offer an amalgamation of technical and material concerns along with the demands of critical discourse. A series of seminars, studio visits, artist talks, critiques, along with a familiarisation of the city’s resources on materials forms the course and prepares the student to experience the range of approaches to Sculpture. As in other disciplines, students are encouraged to develop a personal vocabulary of expression towards an independent body of work in the final year.

What Does Art Mean?

Since conceptual art and postmodern theory came into prominence, it has been proven that anything can be termed art. Durable sculptural processes originally used carving and modelling , in stone, metal, ceramics, wood and other materials; but since modernism, shifts in sculptural process led to an almost complete freedom of materials and process. A wide variety of materials may be worked by removal such as carving, assembled by welding or modelling, or moulded, or cast.

The actual production in many conceptual and contemporary works of art is a matter of assembly of found objects. However, there are many modernist and contemporary artists who continue to excel in the skills of drawing and painting and in creating hands-on works of art. Performing arts comprise dance, music, theatre, opera, mime, and other art forms in which a human performance is the principal product. Performing arts are distinguished by this performance element in contrast with disciplines such as visual and literary arts where the product is an object that does not require a performance to be observed and experienced. Each discipline in the performing arts is temporal in nature, meaning the product is performed over a period of time. Products are broadly categorized as being either repeatable or improvised for each performance.

Advanced courses emphasize inquiry and the development of conceptual approaches along with the broadening of traditional painting practice. Studio and gallery visits, artists’ talks, critical discussions and an intense research- based approach contribute towards the building of an independent body of work in the final year. Historically, the fine arts were meant to appeal to the human intellect, though currently there are no true boundaries. Typically, fine art movements have reacted to each other both intellectually and aesthetically throughout the ages.
